How long before you can claim your principle private residence?

I get asked quite often how long it takes to make a house your home and therefore your principle private residence. This is important as it will save you paying capital gains tax when you sell it.

In the recent case of Richard James Dutton-Foreshaw v HMRC, the Tribunal upheld that Mr Dutton-Foreshaw was entitled to claim principal private residence relief (PPR), despite only having lived in the property concerned for seven weeks.
